while I am of opinion that the allowances for Supervision of Dis-

-tilleries and Collection of Liquor Duties should be revised.

I attach a statement showing the Stations to which these allowanc-

-es attach. The duties of supervision consist in paying surprise

visits to the distilleries and in checking the quantities distill-

-ed. These duties may I think be included in the regular Police

duties and need not be paid for. The collection of duties involve

financial responsibility and should be paid for. I recommend that

allowances at Yaumati, Shamshuipo and Bay View which are for

supervision only be abolished; while those at the remaining

Stations with the exception of Kowloon City be reduced to $10 in

the case of Cheung Chau and to 85 for each of the other Stations

including No. 3 Police Launch. The allowances to the Interpreters

should remain at the present figure (85).

The effect of these recommendations is that a

saving in allowances of some 8365 a month would be made and the

objectionable anomaly to which I have alluded would be removed.

(c). If the members of the European Contingent are

willing to forego these allowances then I recommend that Lance

Sergeants, Sergeants and Inspectors be granted an increase of

salary as follows:-

Lance Sergeants.
